The Four Hour Jolt! Part 5

The Four Hour Jolt! Part 5
Derived from Timothy Ferriss, The 4-Hour Work Week - New and Expanded Edition Now Available!

Tim's
Blog: http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/

RAP4: Eliminate
PROFIT : Time management says we should be more efficient with the way we work. TIM’s DEAL demands you be more effective with your time by being more selective on what tasks you spend your time on. We’ve all been to too many meetings. It’s time to stop doing the things that get in the way of living our dream. Here’s some suggestions to get you started, I mean, stopping.

Single Focus

Stop multi-tasking - it only leaves you stressed and unfocused. You’re better off dealing with one thing at a time with your complete and full attention. Appl
y the Pareto Principle and focus on the 20% of effort that produces 80% of your results.

Information Underload

There’s a limit to how much information we can organise and digest. Information Overload is merely a futile attempt to keep up to date with too much stuff. Narrow your focus and go on an information diet. Eliminate unnecessary TV, news watching, magazine reading, web surfing, book reading, and email activity. Eliminate Inputs, Maximise Output.

Be Effective
There is an efficiency epidemic among intelligent people to focus on how to do things better as opposed to what to do. Time management simply doesn’t work. The biggest gains in your productivity will come from choosing more wisely what activities you are going to take on. Eliminate the ones that make minimal impact.

Refuse Opportunities

Say ‘No’ to anything that doesn’t forward your dream. Remember your time is the currency of your life and you never get back what you waste. Stop trying to be popular with people you don’t care about and start living your dream.

Interuption
Avoidance
Research shows that every time we get interupted it takes about 10 minutes to get back to where we were. Do what ev
er it takes to avoid being interupted. Know when to be a hermit and work from home and set up ways to signal that you don’t want to be interupted. Go to war on the Weapons of Mass Distraction like email, phone calls, meetings...

Schedule Time Wasters
Sounds like a contradiction and that’s exactly what you need. Schedule when you read your emails and when you answer/make phone calls. Grouping like activities saves the time we all need to get our heads around the task in front of us. It also avoids doing tasks more often than we really need to.

Quit Quick

Know when to quit. If a meeting is not turning out - leave. If a movie sucks - leave. If a task is failing - quit. Read Seth Godin’s The Dip for a fuller explanation.

Time Questions
  1. Am I being productive or am I just being busy?
  2. Am I working on something that builds my dream?
  3. Am I working on the things that will produce the best results?

4 Bob Gilbreath: The Next Evolution of Marketing
Connect with Your Customers by Marketing with Meaning

Not the first to talk about the rise of meaning… there seemed to be a few books on this a few year ago… And, now it’s applied to the world of marketing. We’ve had enough being interupted. Marketing has changed. It needs to mean something to me or I’m just not interested. Your brand/product/message needs to add value to my life or I’m not listening. Gilbreath presents a strategy for ‘meaningful marketing’. No, that’s not an oxymoron, that might just be the new reality.

Seth Says: Start a Book Club

Seth Says: Start a Book Club
Seth Godin is one of the most popular bloggers on the planet.

Each day you get a slice of wisdom worth contemplating.

In his most recent post, “Is it too late to catch up?” he outlines a simple plan to get your organization up to speed in the digital media space.

The 10 part plan is Simple Seth at his genius best: No fluff. Succinct. Direct.

Step 4 is this:
Start a book group for your top executives and every person who answers the phone, designs a product or interacts with customers. Read a great online media book a week and discuss. It'll take you about a year to catch up.
That’s music to my ears! That’s exactly what Book Rapper provides!

Here’s our special offer to you…

The Book Rapper issues are all freely available on our website for you to:
  • Download and read
  • Email to as many people you like – everyone in your organization and beyond
  • Add them as a resource to your newsletter email-outs – permission granted!
  • Print and distribute to anyone you want – just mind the trees!
  • Follow Seth’s suggestion: Run a book club based upon them – I prefer ‘In-house Innovation Program’. Discuss the issue for an hour, stepping through each page. Then discuss how to apply them to your situation for the next hour. That’s a neat 2-hour, monthly innovation program ready for you to facilitate. (We can facilitate these sessions for you too!)
The only thing we ask is you don’t edit or sell any of our issues.

And, feel free to share your results, feedback and suggestions so we can help you further.

The 'Free' Debate

One of the fun questions that is often asked at dinner parties and in light-hearted interviews is “Who would you most like to have dinner with?”

The question conjures up the image of a bunch of important people sitting around the table and chewing the fat over a lively debate of world-changing ideas.

The internet is offered as a provider of all things wonderful and I’m pleased to say it can also ‘invite you to dinner with some great minds’. Or, at least let you eavesdrop.

Right now, there is a great debate on the internet… Ah, yes, literally, about the internet and on the internet.

Some of the great minds of digital technology, internet marketing, big ideas and the like are having a ‘free’ debate.

It all started with Chris Anderson of The Long Tail fame (Book Rapper Make Money From Niches) and Editor of Wired Magazine. He’s written a book called ‘Free’ and we discussed this in an earlier blog “Free Chris Anderson”.

Well, his book “Free: The Past and Present of a Radical Price” is to be released in the next couple of days (July 7). And, it’s likely to cause a storm – if it hasn’t already.

Malcolm Gladwell of ‘Blinking Tipping Points for Outliers’ fame, (Book Rapper’s Anti Self Help), suggested in a review in the New Yorker, he didn’t think ‘free’ would work.

Then along came Seth Godin, of ‘Tribes of Purple Cows eating Meatball Sundaes’ fame (Book Rapper’s Marketing How Now). He suggested in his blog post that Malcolm had got it wrong. ‘Free’ was not some philosophical position, just another marketing move that works.

It reminds me of one of the people I'd like to have dinner with, the late great Marshall McLuhan. We can have opinions about planes, trains and automobiles, but in the end, who cares? Technology or media does what it does. Opinions about it being good or bad matter little if it works.

A bunch of other smart people have now joined the ‘free’ conversation. One more chair at the dinner table please…

If you’d like to eavesdrop on some great thinkers thinking about a highly topical issue, then follow the threads in this post.

Alternatively, start with Tim Berry on the Huffington Post. He gives a good overview of the issue and adds a few more mouthfuls from some new dinner party guests.

So, if you want to have some great thinkers and wonderful debate at your dinner table, do it over the net. Virtual dinner parties are probably a good thing for your hips, thighs and waistlines too!

Join in today, it's free!

My Blogging Heroes

The “We Blog” Issue of Book Rapper was derived from Michael A Banks’ book Blogging Heroes.

In his book Banks interviewed 30 of the most influential bloggers on the web.
The Book Rapper version compiled these into a series of RAPs, many of which we’ve offered as slideshows and featured in this blog. See them all on our Slideshare site.

Plus we compared Movies and Blogs highlighting that both of these technologies derive from the acceleration of other media.

Today, I’m posting about three of my Blogging Heroes.

Smart simple Seth…
The famous Seth Godin writes one of the simplest, easy-to-read blogs I know. I model my writing on his: short, sharp, insightful. He’s also the master at turning his blog posts into books.

Read it to learn from one clued in dude!

Local Lad Darren Rowse…
In the big wide world web, I didn’t really expect to be following someone who lives in the same town…
Darren Rowse, aka Problogger, is also a Melbourne boy.
Too bad he barracks for the Blues!
He writes one of the best blogs on how to write a better blog.
My post today is inspired by Darren’s program 31 Days to Build a Better Blog.

Read it to better your blog.

And, my new favourite, courtesy of a Seth link… Chris Guillebeau.

Now, the interesting thing here is that Chris writes about his adventure to visit every country on the planet. Whilst, that’s not my trip, I love his blog model.
Download and read his free manifesto, 279 Days. Then write your own. I’m building a new blog based upon Chris’ model that’ll be available soon.

Read it to be inspired by one man’s journey.

And now, it’s your turn, who are your Blogging Heroes?

To follow or unfollow on Twitter?

Guess who’s following me on Twitter… she’s young, early 20’s, world famous, pop star…

I guess you recognized her photo... Yep, it's Britney Spears!

Just when I thought I was out of it and over the hill, along comes my dream girl!

I just don’t know how she could have found me on the web.
May be she searched for ‘handsome young men’ and my page came up by mistake…

Well, actually… I’ve got another explanation.
It probably wasn’t Britney.
As dismayed as I am, it might just have been someone working for Britney – like the Twitt working for Hugh Jackman who called the Sydney Opera House the Opera Centre.

It seems two things have happened at Twitter recently.

One, it’s become a mainstream bandwagon.
Oprah has just jumped on it.
This might go down in history as the day Twitter became mainstream.

Two, it’s become inauthentic already.
It’s become a game… to see who can get the most followers.

I wonder which came first? Perhaps this is what happens when something becomes mainstream? Or did Twitter have to become inauthentic to become mainstream?

You might have seen the news that Ashton Kucher has become the first Twitt to reach one million followers.
He beat CNN by about 20,000 followers or a day or two.
I’m guessing Britney wants to join in game, thus her personal invite to moi!

My response… get a life!
A million followers on Twitter is an inauthentic and meaningless game.
See my earlier post and Seth Godin’s comment with regard to Facebook friends – the same applies. A friend is only useful if they are friend. Not another number.

It’s no surprise that the backlash has already starter.

Mashable have flagged the ‘unfollow’ campaign.

Early adopter, The Shaq, who’s been on Twitter before it was mainstream, is one who started a campaign to ‘unfollow’ Oprah.
This follows others who have been unfollowing Ashton Kucher to take him below a million followers.

It just shows the game can be played both ways:
To follow or unfollow?

So, should I take up Britney’s offer just so I can brag that she follows me. Or, is there more cred to snub Britney and be known as the ‘guy who said “no” to Britney Spears’?

What do you think I should do?

Do Facebook Friends Count?

I love Seth. Seth Godin that is.

He says smart things in simple ways.

His books and writings are simple translations of what's happening out there in web land and what it all means for your marketing efforts. Our third issue of Book Rapper "Marketing Now-How" is a marketing plan derived from Seth's book Meatball Sundae.

Lately, I've been asked a number of times, "Do Facebook Friends matter?"
I usually give one of three answers...
  1. Barack Obama has a couple of million friends on Facebook and he got to be President. Whilst these people didn't necessarily vote for him, it showed that social networking counts for something.
  2. The meaning of the word 'phoney' comes from the first telephone calls made over 100 years ago. They weren't considered real conversations because you weren't there face-to-face talking to a real person - the conversation was 'phoney'! Now we are used to phone calls, they count as 'real' conversations. Facebook friends are 'phoney' right now, but once we get used to them as a new way of relating and interacting with other people, they won't be anymore. They'll just be friends you hang out with online.
  3. Over to Seth. Having millions of Facebook friends ain't worth a cracker. It's the difference you make to each other in your actions that matter. Seth says it better than me in this off-the-cuff interview from Debbie Weil's You Tube page.

PS: You gotta love those glasses and yes, I am on Facebook.

Here’s the Book Rapper Hot Books for 2009. Here’s my Top Ten list of the books I want to be reading that reflect the biggest issues of our time…

Authenticity
The Book: Joe Pine & Jim Gilmore, Authenticit

Book Website: http://authenticitybo
ok.com/

Hot, Flat and Crowded
The Book: Thomas Friedman; Hot, Flat
and Crowded: Why we need a Green Revolution – and How it Can Renew America.
The Hot Idea: From the author of the best seller The World is Flat, comes a volume that links America’s loss of focus since 9/11 and the global environmental crisis. He describes the way forward as ‘the biggest innovation project in America’.

The Book 1: Steve Taylor; Makin
g Time: Why Time Seems to Pass at Different Speeds and How to Control It
The Book 2: Stefan Klein; The Secret Pulse of Time: Making sense of life's scarcest
commodity
The Hot Idea: Traditional time management presumes we all experience time in the same way all the time. A number
of books are now exploring the psychology of time and how it passes at different speeds. This change in worldview presents new ways to manage yourself and how to get things done.

Groundswell
The Book: Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff; Groundswell: Winning in a world transformed by social technologies

The Hot Idea: The shift to social technologies is a transfer of media from the few t
o the many. Customers are now forming direct connections to each other and creating new communities.
Book Website: http://www.forrester.com/Groundswell/index.html

Happiness
The Book: Stefan Klein; The Science of Happiness

The Hot Idea: There’s a bunch of books out there on Happiness. Klein’s was picked because it cuts to the heart of the issue: science has quantified the impact of being happy on our health and wellbeing. Happiness is n
o longer just a feel good issue. It is now a quantifiable business issue and one for governments too. There’s no excuse now… be happy!

We-Think
The Book: Charles Leadbetter, We-think: mass innovation, not mass production.
The Hot Idea: The web revolution through the lense of innovation and creativity. The internet is not a place of production, it’s a place of collaboration, sharing and fostering ideas. From one of the leading management thinkers of our times, we get an update on Wikinomics and user driven innovation.
Author’s Website: http://www.charlesleadbeater.net/home.aspx

Book website: http://www.wethinkthebook.net/home.aspx

Post-America
The Book: Fareed Zakaria; The Post-American World
The Hot Idea: America has peaked in its global influence. That doesn’t mean it’s now in decline, just that others are growing in importance. The days of the dominant empire are changing and the e
mergence of China, India, Russia, Brazil and others is reshaping the globe.
Author’s Website: http://fareedzakaria.com/books/index.html

Here Comes Everybody
The Book: Clay Shirky; Here Comes Everybody: Organizing without Organizat
ions
The Hot Idea: Another view of the impact of social media.
This one is from a web guru who projects the rise of grassroots activism and the demise of traditional corporate hierarchies and print journalism. It’s not just about the web, it’s a guide to the future of human interaction.
Book Website: http://www.herecomeseverybody.org/

Tribe
The Book: Seth Godin; Tribe: We Need You To Lead Us

The Hot Idea: Social networking sites are making it easier to connect and new tribes are forming everyday. I love Seth’s work: he takes a contemporary challenge and puts a simple spin on it. In this one, Seth’s big question is: Who’s leading? The web can do amazing things and leadership is not one of them.

Author’s Blog: http://sethgodin.typepad.com/

Talent is Overrated
The Book: Geoff Colvin, Talent is Overrated: What really separates World-Class Performers from everybody else.

The Hot Idea: This book grew out a magazine article that questioned the role of ‘natural talent’. Instead, Colvin presumes effort is required for success and then suggests what works best. He suggests how you practice, how you analyse the results you get and learn from your mistakes are the seeds to greatness. It’s not a miracle cure and it is a clear path for us aspiring mortals.

Which one of these books would you like to see RAPPED? Let me know through your comments.

Meatball Sundae

What business are you in? Marketing delivers the answer to that and marketing just changed!
Old Marketing was about selling beige products to beige people by interupting them with advertising.
New Marketing requires a product worth talking about and tools to attract interested people to your offer.
Seth Godin points to something big! Every single business model is under question. New organisations designed to take advantage of the new rules will
overtake those trying to add them to their existing operations (adding sweet toppings to your meatballs). If that sounds like your business, look out!
In our RAP, we've rearranged Seth's 14 marketing trends into the Book Rapper Marketing Map to make it easier for you to thrive in the digital marketing era.
